Why So Late?
Why is this July newsletter so
late? I wasn’t on a plane this month. That’s when I have the time to
write – away from patients, writing, phone, internet, driving the
kids, etc. The next KST seminar has been taking up a lot of time and
then a small tornado ripped up this area last week and we’ve been
busy cleaning up. Where am I living? Kansas?
Timing is everything they say. Last year around this time we were in
Israel for our son’s bar mitzvah. We traveled to many of the places
that are right now being blasted by rockets. Please read this great
short article about the present crisis in Israel, on how it started
and why it persists.
http://jewishworldreview.com/0706/prager071806.php3
Below is more great information to share with co-professionals and
patients.
The $1.6 Trillion Question
The $1.6 Trillion Question: If
We're Spending So Much on Healthcare, Why So Little Improvement in
Quality? Carolyn Clancy, MD Medscape General Medicine. 2006;8(2):58.
Even though the US spends more on healthcare than any other country,
we have shorter longevity, worse public health statistics, and worse
healthcare inflation than most developed nations. Hope or Hype by
Richard A. Deyo MD, MPH and Donald L. Patrick, PhD, MSPH
The answer: We’re not spending $1.6 trillion on healthcare – we’re
spending it on disease care. The allopathic medical approach is an
almost total failure in making people well and preventing illness,
and is the most dangerous form of healthcare that has ever existed.
It’s getting worse, with more people being hospitalized and dying
from medical care than ever before. But perhaps just as bad is the
medical/pharmaceutical practice of turning people into lifetime
consumers of their products. They are told to keep taking drugs the
rest of their lives – they never get better, and in fact suffer from
years of drug-taking.
Chiropractic, homeopathy, naturopathy, nutrition, Chinese medicine,
Ayurvedic medicine and other Empirical, wholistic approaches are far
more effective and much, much safer than the allopathic approach
(and more scientific too!).
ACA Wises Up
Déjà vu – the ACA and Trigon
Three years ago I was critical of the ACA’s Trigon lawsuit (see
letter below). Sadly, I was correct – many DCs donated $millions to
the ACA suit and got nothing in return (only some rich lawyers
benefited). I suggested, in my June 2003 newsletter, that we have a
class action suit against the insurance companies. Unlike Trigon, it
wouldn’t have cost the profession a dime and we’d have had a better
chance of winning. In fact, Aetna had already settled with MDs who
sued them in this manner for $500 million.
On June 13th, 2006 the ACA did, guess what? Actually took my advice
and filed the lawsuit exactly as I suggested. The ACA isn’t asking
you for a dime because the appropriate way to handle this is with a
class action lawsuit based on the successful model I had referenced.
Congratulations ACA.
Now let me forecast my prediction for three years from now. Have you
thought about what would happen to your practice if private
insurance turned into National Healthcare? The only doctors who
really don’t care about all of this are the ones that have cash
practices. Koren Specific Technique is designed to prepare you for
the future so you don’t have to worry about all of this.
This is what I wrote in June 2003 (see prior newsletters at
www.korenpublications.com
Trigon.
First off I want you to know that I am not “anti-Trigon” … It is a
crime the way managed care companies are treating us. I know what
it’s like to be the brunt of a medical conspiracy and fight for the
profession.
However, the ACA’s “Trigon” is not at all like “Wilk” because a
Trigon “win” would benefit chiropractors in Virginia only. Separate
lawsuits would have to be filed in other states, against other
health plans, by more chiropractors for real impact. Those lawsuits
could fail even if Trigon was won, creating a risk of inconsistent
adjudications. So outside of Virginia, Trigon has nothing to do with
you. After 5 years at a reported $100,000/month in legal fees Judge
Jones found the Trigon case so weak he dismissed it.
http://www.vawd.uscourts.gov/opinions/jones/1-00cv00113-sumjudg.pdf.
Should we continue this limited, expensive strategy for 5, 10 or 15
more years at best to help doctors only in Virginia? Should you wait
perhaps 15 years to get paid fairly or are there other options?
MDs outraged by managed care treatment banded together in a
coordinated effort against many different insurers throughout the
US: Humana, Aetna, Pacificare, Prudential and others. Unlike Trigon,
these cases were couched in terms to protect patient’s rights as
well as doctor’s rights.
In addition, all this legal action, which was not thrown out of
court and continues successfully today, was done on contingency –
didn’t cost the profession a dime. In fact, Aetna already settled
with them at a cost of approximately $500 million… It’s something we
should consider exploring.
Company Kills Negative Clinical Trial
From THE MOSS REPORTS – CANCER DECISIONS NEWSLETTER:
In late June, the pharmaceutical company Genentech, Inc. abruptly halted a large phase III clinical trial of its drug Avastin. The trial was halted because the addition of Avastin to an approved drug, Gemzar (gemcitabine), failed to improve overall survival. Despite this setback, Avastin remains a huge profit center for Genentech. US sales of Avastin in the first quarter of 2006 jumped 96 percent to $398 million - not bad for a drug that, so far, has had only a minimal effect on advanced cancers of any kind. FDR’s Paralysis Was Guillain-Barre syndrome - Not Polio
Acute flaccid paralysis can be also
caused by at least West Nile virus, Campylobacter jejuni and enterovirus but the WHO has a single minded focus on the elimination of the polio virus, assuming that will end paralysis. Sherri Tenpenny, DO,
www.BirdFluHype.com
A peer-reviewed study published in 2003 concluded that Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 1921 paralytic illness was
probably Guillain-Barré syndrome, not polio as previously assumed. The Bayesian analysis in the study found that six of eight posterior probabilities favored a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome over poliomyelitis.

Chemo Causes Cancer
"A study of over 10,000 patients shows clearly that chemo’s supposedly strong track record with Hodgkin’s disease (lymphoma) is actually a lie. Patients who underwent chemo were 14 times more likely to develop leukemia and 6 times more likely to develop cancers of the bones, joints, and soft tissues than those patients who did not undergo chemotherapy (NCI Journal 87:10)."—John Diamond
Children who are successfully treated for Hodgkin's disease are 18 times more likely later to develop secondary malignant tumors. Girls face a 35 percent chance of developing breast cancer by the time they are 40 – which is 75 times greater than the average. The risk of leukemia increased markedly four years after the end of successful treatment, and reached a plateau after 14 years, but the risk of developing solid tumors remained high and approached 30 percent at 30 years. (New Eng J Med. March 21, 1996)
Words of Wisdom
A follower of Rabbi Meir of Premishlan once complained to him about a man who had started a competing business. "He is depriving me of my livelihood!" he cried. "You must tell him to close his shop!"
Said Rabbi Meir: "Have you ever noticed how a horse behaves when he is led to a water hole? He begins to paw angrily at the water with his hooves; only when the water is well-muddied does he begin to drink. Why does the horse act this way?"
"I don't know, why?"
"Because the horse sees his reflection in the water and thinks that another horse has come to drink his water. So he kicks and paws until he has 'chased away' the other horse. What the horse doesn't understand," concluded Rabbi Meir, "is that G-d has created enough water for all the horses.

Marc Swerdlick, DC, president of S Group Inc., provides ethical marketing systems for all kinds of small businesses and organizations. Many of Dr. Swerdlick’s strategies have been used in healthcare applications and are based on a pre-education philosophy. His seminars are presented in conjunction with Integrity Strategies (www.integritystrategies.com) and he can be reached at drswerd@gmail.com or 630-693-1553. Recently he came on his own dime to a KST seminar and reported on it on his website (www.practicecentral.com).
I think every DC should read his column, Dr. Marc’s Viewpoint, on his site. Few in the profession are so honest – it’s refreshing.

I certainly have seen some amazing results in just a few days of using the technique. I had a classic example of two people coming in with basically the same problem, a very hot SI joint and pain into the leg. I adjusted the one using exclusive KST and the other my old way, lumbar roll mainly. Needless to say the KST patient was better in two visits; I am still working with the other.
I also have had two 3-week-old babies come into the practice this week. I cannot remember the last time a mom brought in a newborn for me to check and adjust. Innately they just knew that before KST I had just too rough a method. Thanks for the ongoing support through e-mails and the web site forum. I have never experienced such genuine interest from a teacher, trying to ensure that his lesson was absorbed by the student.

Free Flu Shots for LACC Students
Is this why LACC is pronounced lack? Many other chiropractic schools recommend shots to enroll.
Dr Koren, I am currently a tenth term student at the LACC and the whole student body received this email from a doc at our school. Thought you would get a kick out of it.

It’s almost like being an R.D. (real doctor)
From the ACA’s internist program. The patient fills out a comprehensive… "medical" history, including the current complaint…. The DC will also take the patient’s vital signs. Then based on the history and exam, the DC may "order" the proper laboratory examinations, including blood tests. Somewhere in there they might actually check for subluxations...but then that would be a secondary problem now, wouldn't it? Matt Miller, DC
Thanks so much for your newsletters. Having been in practice for 20 years (and loving every minute of it!), I so enjoy reading your humor! I also admire that you have an opinion and aren’t afraid to use it! Keep it coming. Dr Cristina Rodes
Tedd, I just returned from a trip to Gettysburg and was awed by the hugeness of this 3 day battle. 51,000 lives lost in what must have been a field of misery and suffering for those involved. While strolling through the national museum, I came across a display of the 75th (and final) reunion of the battle (1938). There were pictures of +/- 94 year old men that told their tale of this historic event. Despite living through this horrific war, these men looked strong and healthy and had their wits about them. They more than likely grew up eating basic foods, with NO drugs, antibiotics or vaccines to poison their systems. Looking at the pictures of the boys who fought, they appeared big boned with large teeth; a far cry from the overweight, puffer inhaling, flourosis stained teenagers I see today who are always tired and sick. These individuals also rarely bathed, and when they did, it was in non-chlorinated/non-fluoridated water and being farmers as most were at the time, they spent most of the day in the sun without sun block!!
I thought of this because of the constant mantra I hear that "people in the US are living longer and better lives than previous generations thanks to our superior medical care". I have often noted while walking through the many old grave yards in central New York the longevity of the people from the 1800's. Many into their 80's and 90's. (I thought the average age was 47?) I am sure that Alzheimer's was unheard of as well as many of the chronic degenerative diseases that seem the norm in our society. It just makes me sick to see where we have gone and that the lies of the medical profession have brainwashed the majority of the citizens of this country so that they accept the fate handed to them. For many people now, it is not a matter of if they will get sick, but when. Joe Barbara, DC
Vaccination exemptions – a complex issue
Tedd, I'm concerned about your latest email newsletter's suggestion that people can join a church to avoid vaccines. There is federal case law in which a chiropractor LOST the exemption right for doing this. There are also state laws that specifically do NOT recognize such religions. Doing this puts a person's exemption rights at great risk – and it’s probably not necessary in most instances.
I've seen MUCH misinformation about religious exemptions on the internet by many well-meaning people, and in some instances outright incorrect information. The topic is very complex, legally - when I decided to write a book (or small pamphlet, can't really tell yet) on the subject, the outline alone was 10 typewritten pages, listing all of the component parts to the subject of vaccine religious exemptions.
I'm one of a handful of attorneys in private practice around the country who handles vaccine exemptions, and may be the only one who has thoroughly researched and studied the state and federal case law from around the country. Even many attorneys give incorrect advice on this, having not conducted this same research (some of their clients end up at my door with incorrect understandings...). I've even seen one of the rare knowledgeable attorneys on this subject put out information that, due to subsequent changes in the law, was after those changes misleading.
PLEASE consult with me before you issue information about religious exemptions, and let me know if you'd be interested in publishing or distributing the pamphlet/book I'm working on--if so, I'll forward a draft when I'm finished with it.

The Deaf Bookkeeper
A Mob Godfather finds out that his deaf bookkeeper has screwed him for $10 million bucks. He hired a deaf bookkeeper since it was assumed that he would not be able to hear anything and never have to testify in court.
When the Godfather goes to lean on the bookkeeper about his missing money, he brings along his attorney, who knows sign language.
The Godfather asks the bookkeeper: "Where is the $10 million bucks you embezzled from me?"
The attorney, using sign language, asks the bookkeeper where the money is hidden. The bookkeeper signs back: "I don't know what you are talking about."
The attorney tells the Godfather: "He says he doesn't know what you're talking about."
That's when the Godfather pulls out a 9 mm pistol, puts it to the bookkeeper's temple, cocks it, and says: Ask him again!"
The attorney signs to the bookkeeper: "He'll kill you for sure if you don't tell him!"
The bookkeeper signs back: "OK! OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed in my cousin Enzo's backyard in Queens!"
T he Godfather asks the attorney: "Well, what'd he say?"
The attorney replies: "He says you don't have the balls to pull the trigger."
